section 4 the evolution of the form of book binding

after more than 2000 years of evolution, China's book binding, such as simple policy binding, scroll binding, wind-driven binding, folded binding, butterfly binding, back binding, thread binding, and so on, in modern times, with the introduction and development of modern Western printing, under the influence of western book binding, Entering the era of paperback and hardcover, special attention should be paid to the effective stroke of electronic tension machine and sample fixture. Paperback and hardcover have gradually replaced the traditional Chinese thread binding and occupied the book binding market

1. Paperback

paperback is considered to have evolved from the traditional Chinese backpack. It looks exactly the same as the backpack, but it also has similarities with the traditional Chinese thread. The reason why the back cover can evolve into paperback is not so much the influence of western book binding, but rather the inevitable product of the transformation from single-sided printing to double-sided printing

paperback can be divided into flat nails, riding nails, wireless glue binding, loose leaf binding, threading and other types (Figure). Where:

1 Flat nails

flat nails, i.e. iron wire flat nails. It is a binding method that the printed pages are folded and pasted into a volume, then nailed firmly with iron wire at the side of the nail opening, and then wrapped with the cover. Used for binding General books

2. Horse riding nail

horse riding nail is a binding method in which the printed pages are folded and pasted into a book, together with the cover, and fastened with iron wire in the middle of the book. In this way, the pages of the book can be flattened and easy to read. It is used for binding magazines and generally thinner books

3. Wireless adhesive binding

wireless adhesive binding is a binding method in which the book block folded and pasted into a volume is cut at the side of the binding opening, and then the book pages are glued on the spine and wrapped with the cover. It is very similar to the traditional backpack. The books bound with wireless glue are easy to harden due to the glue. It is easy to fall off after reading the pages for a long time and strengthening the residual pole clearing, which is not firm enough. Therefore, books with strong timeliness, short-term use or infrequent use can be bound with wireless glue

4. Loose leaf binding

loose leaf binding is a binding method without adhesion between single pages. Generally used for calendar, photo album, etc

5. Thread binding

thread binding is the most solid and ideal binding method in paperback books. Except for the cover, the inner page binding is the same as the hardcover. The book block that will be folded and pasted into a book will be connected with a threading machine to make the pages one of the hottest in recent years, and then wrapped with a cover. This kind of binding method is not limited by the thickness of books, and it is more convenient to read

II. Hardcover

hardcover books cost more and sell at a higher price than paperback. It is usually used for books with a large number of pages, frequent use, long-term preservation, aesthetic requirements and more important. Its cover and back cover shall be made of hard or semi-hard materials. In appearance, hardcover can be divided into three types: round back, square back and soft surface (Figure)

2. Square back hardcover

square back hardcover is also called flat back hardcover, which is basically similar to round back hardcover, except that the back of the book is not rounded and is flat. If paperback is converted into hardcover, or the pages are all single pages, it can only be made into a flat back due to the inability to thread. Paperback to hardcover is mostly used in the case that the library adds a hard cover to the purchased paperback books in order to preserve them

3. Soft hardcover

soft hardcover is to reduce the weight of books and facilitate reading by changing the hard surface to soft surface, that is, to replace the thicker paperboard on general hardcover books with thinner paperboard. Generally thick and frequently read books, such as various reference books, are bound with this method

while the modern book binding form evolved from traditional Chinese thread binding to paperback and hardcover, the book binding, including book format, font, cover, ring lining, title page, layout, illustrations and the previously mentioned binding, has also undergone major changes. For example, the book format is becoming more and more fixed; The design of the cover is colorful and colorful; Various layout formats; The number of illustrations increased and illustrated; The use of punctuation marks is becoming more and more mature; Due to the influence of the west, the font also developed in the direction of beautification.
